John of Avila

John of Avila
(1500–69)
   Missionary, Mystic and Saint.
John was born near Toledo, Spain, and was educated at Salamanca and at Alcalá. Although he had initially wanted to go to America, he was persuaded to do his missionary work in Andalusia. A powerful preacher, he was fearless in his denunciations and was brought before the Inquisition in 1533. After his innocence was established, he helped found the University of Granada and did much to reform the Spanish Church. A friend of John of god, teresa of avila and francis borgia, he is today remembered for his Audi Filia (a treatise on spiritual perfection) and for his Spiritual Letters, which are now regarded as classics.
